Customer Advisory: Update 3 – Container Dwell Fee at Ports of Los Angeles & Long Beach Postponed to Dec. 27th
December 20, 2021
Please be advised that the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have announced that container dwell fees will be postponed until December 27th.
In late October, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach announced that an “emergency fee” would be assessed against cargo dwelling on port Terminals in excess of specified periods. The announced fees were developed in coordination with the White House’s Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and several supply chain stakeholders.
The purpose of the fees is to incentivize timely removal of containers from the San Pedro Bay terminals to improve the supply chain’s fluidity and reduce the critical level of congestion in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Ports will collect the fees directly from Ocean Carriers, ($100 per container, increasing in $100 increments per container per day until the container is removed from the terminal). The revenue will be re-invested into programs designed to address the impact of congestion throughout San Pedro Bay.
Since the October announcement, both ports have experienced a 46% decline in dwell times. The ports will reassess fee implementation again in a week.
For more detailed information, please see the announcements by the Port of Long Beach.
We will continue to monitor the situation and send additional updates as needed. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your APL Logistics Account Manager or local APL Logistics office.
