Customer Advisory: Potential Strikes – Canadian Border Services
June 3, 2024
The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) has notified stakeholders about the possibility of labor strikes that could significantly impact the transport, processing, and clearance of goods entering or leaving the Canadian border.
The dedicated CBSA employees who are members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) labor union voted to strike as early as June. They are seeking parity with other law enforcement personnel across Canada. The union team is now at a critical juncture and in preparation for strike action.
The Government of Canada, Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat advised the following statement*:
“There are important upcoming opportunities where both parties can make real progress toward an agreement. By the end of May, we will receive recommendations from an independent party—the Public Interest Commission—which will help bring the two sides together. Then, on June 3, guided by those recommendations, both parties will begin mediation.”
“The Border Services Group is comprised of approximately 11,000 positions at the CBSA that are primarily involved in the planning, development, delivery or management of the inspection and control of goods entering Canada. It said 90 percent of front-line border employees are classified as essential, which means they would have to continue providing service in the event of a strike.”
