Customer Advisory: Potential Nationwide Port Workers Strike in India
August 23, 2024
India’s major port workers’ unions have called for a strike from August 28 to demand immediate resolution of pay revisions and pension benefits.
According to reports, the Indian government’s shipping ministry formed a bipartite wage negotiation committee in March 2021, and the workers submitted their demands six months later, ahead of the expiration of the previous agreement in December 2021. However, although the wage negotiation committee met seven times subsequently, it failed to meet the port workers’ demands.
A nationwide strike by India’s port workers could exacerbate the existing congestion issues at major Asian and European ports, leading to further delays in shipments. This could have widespread impacts on global trade and commerce.
The government and port management are being urged to consider the workers’ demands, such as pay scale revisions, payment of arrears, and protection of existing benefits, in order to avoid the disruption of a strike. A meeting between the Ports & Shipping Ministry and the unions is scheduled for August 24, but no progress is expected until then.
In a new development, a revised wage offer has been proposed on August 22 in an attempt to settle the dispute before the potential strike action.
